Diabetes
The course equips dental teams to understand diabetes and respond appropriately to diabetes-related events in practice including Hyperglycaemia and Hypoglycaemia.
Aim
This course aims to enhance the dental team's knowledge of diabetes and provide the essential skills to confidently recognise and manage a hypoglycaemic emergency within a UK dental practice setting.
Objectives
During this course, learners will:
- Define diabetes and its relevance to dental care.
- Identify the common signs and symptoms of a hypoglycaemic episode.
- Learn the correct protocol for managing a conscious patient experiencing hypoglycaemia.
- Understand the indications for, and the procedure of, administering an emergency glucagon injection for an unconscious patient.
Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, the learner will be able to:
- Explain what diabetes is and its significance in a dental context.
- Recognise the signs and symptoms that indicate a patient is having a hypoglycaemic attack.
- Confidently manage a conscious patient experiencing a hypoglycaemic event in the dental chair.
- Describe how and when to administer an emergency glucagon injection.
- Accurately measure a patient's blood glucose level using a glucometer.
