Safeguarding Adults within a Dental Practice
Aim
This course is designed to equip the entire dental team with the essential knowledge and skills to understand and effectively apply adult safeguarding principles within a UK dental practice setting.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to:
- Identify the potential signs of sexual, physical, or emotional abuse and neglect through a person-centred approach.
- Recognise when adults experiencing abuse, harm, or neglect also have caring responsibilities for others, and make appropriate referrals to relevant authorities.
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of forensic procedures in adult safeguarding, relevant to their professional role, and apply this knowledge to meet both clinical and legal requirements.
- Conduct and document a risk or harm assessment where appropriate for a vulnerable adult.
- Communicate effectively and sensitively with adults at risk, particularly those with mental capacity issues, learning disabilities, or specific communication needs.
- Contribute to and make considered judgements on how to effectively safeguard an adult at risk.
- Develop, contribute to, and communicate effective care plans for adults who are, or may be, subject to abuse, harm, or neglect.
- Discuss the complexities surrounding suspected adult abuse and neglect, and effectively manage the associated uncertainty and risk.
Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, the learner will have an understanding of:
- How to contribute effectively to inter-agency assessments by gathering and sharing information in line with legal frameworks.
- How to document concerns in a manner that is appropriate for adult safeguarding procedures and potential legal proceedings.
- How to undertake documented reviews of their own and their team’s adult safeguarding practices through methods such as clinical audit, case discussion, peer review, and supervision.
- How to provide and receive clinical supervision using effective models, and recognise the potential personal impact that safeguarding work can have on professionals.
- How to apply lessons learned from audits and Safeguarding Adults Reviews (SARs) to improve clinical practice.
- How to advise colleagues on appropriate and lawful information sharing in the context of safeguarding.
- How to contribute effectively to serious case reviews and domestic homicide review processes when required.
- How to access support and specialist expertise when encountering complex safeguarding situations.
- How to participate in, and where appropriate, chair multi-disciplinary safeguarding meetings.
- The skills required to participate effectively in a formal safeguarding enquiry.
