First Aid for Youth Mental Health

This qualification is for anyone who engages with young people. This may include teachers, carers and youth group leaders, as well as young adults who want to actively learn how to help their peers, or be more aware of the issues surrounding mental wellbeing.

This qualification will focus on the mental wellbeing of our younger people in society, covering areas including depression, self-harm, eating disorders and bullying.  This qualification provides the knowledge and skills on how to understand and identify a potential mental health condition.

This course allows delegates to correctly identify potential health conditions, and will further develop their understanding of the support available when conditions are recognised. We do not teach our students how to diagnose or treat mental health conditions, as our learners will not be healthcare professionals.

First Aid for Youth Mental Health Course Content

  • What is First Aid for Youth Mental Health
  • Identifying mental health conditions
  • How stress can impact mental wellbeing
  • Analysing mental health conditions
  • The impact of drugs and alcohol
  • A risk assessment and action plan in regards to mental health

The minimum classroom contact time of 6-hours can be spread over a maximum of 3-weeks, ensuring that each session is a minimum of 2 hours.

Candidates must demonstrate a willingness to learn and interact during group activities. The training venue should be quiet and undisturbed. Staff should not be expected to be on duty. Staff attending should remain for the entire length of the session.

The qualification is assessed through a written assessment paper and the practical demonstration of the first aid action plan for mental health. Learners must successfully pass both parts of the assessment to be awarded the qualification.

A Level 2 Award (Level 5 in Scotland) in First Aid for Youth Mental Health will be issued to the learner, subject to successful assessment. The qualification is valid for three years from the date of achievement.

The learner will need to complete the full course again to requalify for a further three years.
